Retail Interest in Bitcoin and Ethereum Hits 12-Month Low Despite Surge in Institutional Adoption

Tweet volume for the keywords "Bitcoin" and "Ethereum" has dropped to its lowest level in 12 months, with mentions of Bitcoin falling to approximately 130,000 and Ethereum to around 40,000. This level of social media engagement mirrors figures last seen in 2020—a time when institutional involvement in cryptocurrency was still in its infancy.

The tweet volume metric acts as a rough indicator of retail investor attention, reflecting public discourse rather than actual capital inflows. What makes the current data striking is not just the absolute decline, but the stark contrast with today’s institutional landscape. In 2020, neither Bitcoin (BTC) nor Ethereum (ETH) had garnered significant interest from Wall Street, spot ETF approvals, or corporate treasury allocations. Today, that picture has reversed dramatically: tokenization dominates agendas at major financial conferences and appears regularly in traditional finance press releases.

This divergence suggests a growing decoupling between institutional adoption and retail enthusiasm. Historically, low social media chatter around crypto assets has often coincided with periods of price stagnation or market drawdowns. While some industry observers hope that robust infrastructure development and institutional backing may now sustain momentum without mass retail participation, past bull cycles have largely been fueled—and narrated—by widespread public engagement.
