U.S. National Debt Surpasses $39 Trillion as Senator Lummis Advocates for Bitcoin Reserve Plan

U.S. federal debt has exceeded $39 trillion as of mid-March, with debt held by the public surpassing $31 trillion, according to recent data. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that the fiscal year 2026 deficit will reach $1.9 trillion, and public debt could climb to $56 trillion by 2036.

Amid growing concerns over national debt sustainability, Senator Cynthia Lummis is advancing her proposed BITCOIN Act, which would mandate the U.S. Treasury to acquire up to 1 million bitcoins (BTC) over a five-year period and retain the holdings for at least two decades. As of now, there has been no official confirmation from the Treasury regarding any Bitcoin purchases.

On June 16, Senator Lummis shared updated modeling suggesting that such a strategic Bitcoin reserve could potentially reduce the national debt by one-third to one-half over time. She also expressed confidence that the Treasury could begin purchasing Bitcoin before the end of 2026, pending legislative approval.
